How to Declutter Your Wardrobe for Spring

decluttering is my happy place. since i was a kid, i loved to organize and dispose of my grandparents’ old knick knacks. they’re mild hoarders so of course they didn’t enjoy it as much as i did.

over the years, i’ve given lots of attention (and content) to curating a wardrobe that i love. this work has taught me that too much of our closets are filled with trendy and low-quality pieces. i believe wholeheartedly that removing this clutter is a key component to honing your personal style.

today, i work hard to only buy what i love and give every item a purpose. this forces me to shop with intention and declutter a few times a year. check out my latest declutter video on youtube and keep reading for my top tips.

Take Everything Out of Your Closet

don’t fight me friend. removing everything for the upcoming season from your closet is necessary to engage in a thorough assessment. how can we declutter without knowing what we have? brace yourself because depending on your wardrobe this may take a few hours. however, it’s soooo worth it.

Make Three Piles: Keep, Donate and Sell

i use the marie kondo method of decluttering. her primary question is “does it spark joy?” if not, then it has to go! sometimes this process can leave you vacillating, but please be honest with yourself. if it doesn’t spark joy then you won’t wear it, and if you do, then you won’t feel your best.

there are several great websites and platforms to sell pieces that are in good condition, especially those that come at higher price points. i use poshmark and have several items for sale in my closet currently.

Find a Good Tailor

decluttering always reveals the pieces that need tailoring. find a good tailor to adjust your hemlines, take a waist in or reapply missing buttons. too often we get rid of pieces that just need a little TLC. as a matter of fact, repairing our clothes was commonplace before the rise of fast fashion. with so many cheaply made and low-quality items, too often our impulse is to throw things out instead of giving them new life.

Create Your Capsule Wardrobe

the best part about decluttering is organizing the items that bring you joy into a capsule wardrobe. this is an interchangeable group of pieces that can be mixed and matched throughout a season. having a capsule wardrobe makes getting dressed so much easier, and i go in depth about this process in my e-book — how to declutter and curate a closet you love. you can also find lots of inspiration on my youtube channel!

i hope this post has shared helpful tips on how to declutter your wardrobe for spring. you deserve a wardrobe and style that you love friend. it all starts with a good declutter.
