Fashion has no rules and the key to personal style is wearing what you love. I’ve been a style content creator for over a decade and deeply believe the people who we consider the most stylish are those who follow their own path. Here are my five style “rules” to break in 2024.
No White After Labor Day
Contrary to this outdated belief, white can and should be worn all year. It’s a versatile color that can enhance your style regardless of the season. For example, wearing white boots is the perfect way to add a pop to darker colors typically worn during winter. If you’re hesitant, then start small with white hats and shoes.

Handbags and Shoes Must Match
Another fashion rule that’s been around for ages is that your handbag and shoes must match. This rule can be quite restrictive and hinder your creativity in mixing and matching your accessories. Plus, it often makes us hesitant to wear what we already own and instead buy new accessories.
In 2024, focus on matching your handbag and shoes to your clothes and not to each other. This will add flexibility to your style and create a more unique and individualized look.
Save Special Occasion Clothing
Do you have items in you have “special occasion only” pieces? If so, this rule needs to be broken. Saving clothes and accessories for special occasions can lead to unworn items that just gather dust. Instead, in 2024, try “contrast dressing” by mixing a dressy item with something casual. This can make your special items more wearable and add a touch of sophistication to your everyday outfits.
Black, White and Tan are the Only Neutrals
Many of us believe that black, white and tan are the only neutrals that can be paired with any color. This is not true.
In fact, there are many other colors and prints that can serve as neutrals in your outfits. This year, don’t limit yourself to just black, white, and tan. Instead, give animal prints, jewel tones and metallics a try. These definitely add a fun and fresh twist to your style.

Don’t Mix Metals
Lastly, the rule about not mixing metals is long overdue for a break. Long gone are the days that gold and silver jewelry can’t be worn together. Mixing metals can actually add depth and interest to your look. It’s a great way to express your personal style and to add a modern touch to your outfits like I did below at New York Fashion Week.
