i’ve been a full-time entrepreneur for two months, and it still seems unreal. i get to wake up without an alarm clock and actually give my body the rest that it deserves. plus, between a laptop and wifi, the world is literally my office. it’s been a sweet transition. however, i wasn’t always on this path.
i remember once confessing to my business coach that i struggled with coming across as “less cool” if i was open about my entrepreneurship goals online. she quickly reminded me that everyone who purchases my services or products was intended to do so. she told me that we were in a “soul contract,” and i’ll never forget those words.
there are six steps that have been integral in my quest to turn my side hustle into a profitable main hustle. they literally shaped my life in an unimaginable way.
Top Tips for Turning Your Side Hustle into Your Main Hustle
Adopt and Maintain a Growth Mindset
if you think that you’ll fail, then you will. our perceptions are reality and our thoughts shape our worlds. therefore, i dodge negative thoughts like neo in the matrix.
ain’t nobody got the time to be ruminating on the possibility of failure. why when all signs in my life point to the complete opposite? money, opportunities and success are flowing to me because i believe that i am worthy of abundance. period.
everything that i need to learn and grow my business will happen in due time. today, i am maximizing the gifts that the Creator gave me with intention. my growth mindset allowed me to have the courage to leave my full-time job and is allowing me to remain steadfast on my entrepreneurship path.
Project Your Gross and Net Income for the Year
when transitioning into full time entrepreneurship you gotta know your income. pretty obvious right?
well, i crunched numbers and created a budget multiple times. in fact, it was damn right obsessive. i just wanted to make sure that if all else failed, my big buckets of income were rock solid. thankfully, they were, and when i gave myself the freedom to create with abandon, my blog and social media presence has started to earn a pretty coin too.
recently, i realized that i needed to see the big picture regarding my yearly income. between the blog, social media, workshops, equity contracts and more, things were getting a little fuzzy. i jumped over to google sheets and created a spreadsheet with all my streams of income, date that invoices were paid, monthly expenses, retirement savings and taxes. this allows me to see my net and gross income and determine how much i should be paying myself each month.
projecting my gross and net income for the year also has allowed me to create actionable goals. for example, i realize that i’d like to slow down on the time it takes to execute brand partnerships and accelerate onboarding a new equity client. plus, i have contracts that span lengths of time from a one-time post to a monthly engagement to a six month or one year contract. without seeing the big picture, i would have no idea how to budget my multiple streams of income.
Maintain Multiple Streams of Income
i don’t intend to work for someone else ever again. please know that if you see me on somebody’s job, then the offer was too good to resist. one of the reasons why i’m able to rely on myself for employment is because i have multiple streams of income.
i’ve written about my buckets of income transparently in this blog post on how i bought myself out of my full-time job. for the most part, my income falls into four buckets: brand partnerships, bullet journal workshops, 21-day happiness project toolkit downloads and equity consulting. i can live a pretty nice lifestyle off my equity consulting alone since this skill set taps into my law degree; however, my brand partnerships are starting to become incredibly lucrative. this traction is amazing because it ensures that i’ll never have to solely depend on one bucket of income no matter how large it may seem today.
in fact, i’m also looking toward creating my first physical product this year. with a rapidly growing social media presence, this will ensure that i’m connecting with my tribe through those “soul contracts” that my business coach mentioned.
overall, maintaining multiple streams of income will help to ensure your coins are always flowing and bills are always paid.
Develop a Routine
developing a routine has been integral in my success so far as a full-time entrepreneur. although i’m not punching a time clock, i’m more focused and dedicated to my work than ever before. having a routine has helped me to get shit done and not work until midnight.
how do i create a routine and stay organized? first, every sunday, i create a weekly spread in my bullet journal. it allows me to create a to-do list for the week and determine what i call my “big rocks” of work. “big rocks” are large tasks that when they’re completed it allows every thing else to fall into place. for example, research and writing are usually my big rocks that then have smaller tasks associated.
i also make time for self-care. i workout at least three days a week and take wednesdays off to do something just for me. this wednesday, the weather was beautiful, and i went shopping in georgetown. having this down time allowed me to be much more productive when i logged back onto my computer.
developing a routine will help you to not only check tasks off your to-do list, but also get the rest that you deserve. you can check out my video here for more on how to create a bullet journal to maximize your productivity and self-care.
Celebrate Small Wins
i almost cried when i hit 500 subscribers on youtube. that was last month and now i’ve grown to over 700. i know that it’s a tiny amount to lots of youtubers, but for me it’s pretty significant. not only is my channel growing, but i’m making my dreams as a content creator come true. plus, the fact that 700 people care about what i say or the creativity that i put forward is a blessing.
i celebrate my small wins as a signal to the universe that i’m ready to receive the big ones. i’m a big believer that gratitude is the gateway to abundance. how can i expect 100,000 youtube subscribers if i don’t acknowledge and recognize the grace that i’ve been given to even have one?
