How to Setup Your Bullet Journal for a Successful Year

bullet journaling changed my life. i know that sounds extra AF, but it’s my single self-care habit that’s made room for so many more.

WATCH: The Best Work from Productivity Hacks

first, you may be wondering what is a bullet journal? it’s a productivity system created by ryder carroll to help people prioritize tasks and achieve small goals throughout the day. that’s cute, but i’ve taken these principles to the next level.

my bullet journal is a place where i track daily habits, weekly tasks and monthly goals. i even use it to take notes and project plan. it’s like my security blanket tucked under my arm or in my purse wherever i go.

people often ask how i’m so consistent with my practice. well, it’s because i use my journal for almost every detail of my life. with a new year right around the corner, it’s the perfect time for you to get started.

if you’re interested in bullet journaling, then these tips will help you get started.

How to Set Up Your Bullet Journal for a Successful Year

Create a Vision Board

first, create a vision board. this can be one word or a collage of pictures. the goal is to see what you want to achieve in 2021. i’m a big believer in manifestation and this practice has helped me to accomplish everything from savings goals to buying myself out of my full-time job. there’s a gospel song that says, write the vision and make it plain. creating a vision board is exactly what helps us to create what we’re seeking in our lives.

Make a Reflection Spread

we all know that 2020 has been a low down dirty b*tch with no morals. despite this year’s tough times, each of us has been blessed in some way. reflect on what you’d like to keep in your life and what you’d like to change. take a moment to be grateful for all the positive things that came your way. finally, write down what good habits you’re taking into the new year and bad habits that you’re leaving behind.

Don’t Stress the Small Stuff

let perfection go. creating and maintaining your bullet journal is not about perfection. it’s about growth and personal development. this means don’t sweat the small stuff like making mistakes or going a few days without using it. no one is judging or grading you on this project. if you make a mistake then white it out, draw a line through it or simply leave it and just keep going. we’re not making perfect the enemy of good in 2021.

Keep the Supplies Minimal

if you’re new to bullet journaling, then stay away from pinterest. i’m just kidding (kind of). basically, social media will make you believe that you don’t deserve to have a bullet journal if you aren’t a museum worthy artist. this is a lie. i don’t sketch or draw and barely use things like stickers in my journal. i teach my workshop students that all you need to bullet journal is a pen and a notebook. dassit!

Track Your Habits

whether monthly or weekly, a bullet journal is a great way to track your habits. my weekly habits are typically drinking water, meditation, medication and exercise. however, i switch these up based upon my needs and any new habits that i’m trying to create. seeing your habits in real time is super helpful in achieving your goals and being mindful of your actions. don’t over do it though. creating a long list of habits that are impossible to achieve is counter productive.
