Five Tips for Creating a Home Interior You Love

Five Tips for Creating a Home Interior You Love

i hated our apartment for the first six months. it felt cramped compared to our last place, and i just couldn’t figure out the vibe. plus, we decided that my fiancé would get to choose the accent wall color. she chose pink.

how in the hell was i supposed to decorate around a pink wall?!?

Five Tips for Creating a Home Interior You Love

i’ve never had an issue falling in love with my home decor so it felt weird to open the door everyday and not feel excited to be home. finally, my friend gave us an antique mirror that i swear instantly transformed the room. it became the accent wall’s focus point and brought everything together.

Five Tips for Creating a Home Interior You Love

after pouting for six months, i finally got my life together and dedicated time and attention to our space. here’s how we created a home interior that we love.

vintage and thrifted pieces can take your home to the next level

i’ve never financed a piece of furniture in my life and don’t plan to anytime soon. for this reason, i’m always looking for the most affordable options when decorating.

we hit the jackpot with our media console from a local thrift store.  actually, it was a china cabinet with two pieces, and i decided to leave the cabinet in store. we brought it home and did a quick diy project to create a custom piece for only $25.

buy what you love

i’ve always believed in the principle to buy what you love. i stumbled upon a yard sale one day and scored a few art pieces and large picture frames. at the time, i had no idea what they’d be used for.

years later, the large frames hold smaller pieces of art on our accent wall and the no parking sign that i picked up for $2 is one of our best statement pieces.

don’t be afraid to not match

i don’t remember the last time that i purchased a piece of furniture, accent pillow, painting or other home interior item home because it “matched” other pieces. it might sound counterintuitive, but i believe a focus on matching can hurt your interior style.

our homes should be unique reflections of our interests and personal style.  i trust my taste enough to know that if i’m attracted to an item, it will find a place in our home.

invest in plants

i’ve turned into a full-time plant mom. seriously, it’s an obsession that i’m so glad i found.

i’ve dabbled with owning plants for years (remember that succulent craze a few years ago?), but never really focused on their maintenance. without attention, most died and i pretty much gave up.

then came my fiddle leaf fig named envy, and my life changed for the better. she required me to do research and tend to her like a new pet. seriously, i was awake at 2 am watching youtube videos on how to water a fiddle leaf fig.

i’m happy to say that envy is thriving, and she’s inspired me to grab a few more plant babies. the way that they’ve elevated our home is amazing.

collect prints or paintings

one of my dreams is to own a collection of fine art. carrie mae weems, nina chanel and mickalene thomas are just a few of my favorite artists and photographers. until my coins allow though, i’m enjoying supporting local artists and sourcing cool pieces.

our most recent find was a trio of paintings with coordinating colors from an artist in richmond. it’s the first place that your eye goes when walking into our home and sets everything off.
