sometimes you gotta getaway.
i’m a big proponent of travel as a form of self-care. between my new job and the blog, i needed a damn break. i’ve never been camping, and don’t quite understand what’s enticing about sleeping outside (praises for indoor plumbing).
while camping isn’t my jam, glamping sounded like fun. i joined virginia tourism corporation’s crush friday campaign to take friday off and enjoy a trip off the beaten path.
Getting There
we were surrounded by green as we drove through shenandoah valley. just two hours away from washington, dc, the drive alone is worth the trip. one of my favorite memories is driving down skyline drive with my grandparents last thanksgiving. it’s breathtaking during fall.
Getaway Cabin
we spotted the small sign pointing to the getaway cabins and got excited. let’s face it, this trip is the closest i may ever come to living like one of my heroes, cheryl strayed.
then we found connie. our tiny house surrounded by trees, two adirondack chairs and a picnic table.
we opened the front door using a code that i received by text, and i was shocked. i’m not sure how, but every single thing you need for a weekend stay was in the cabin. comfortable bed, radio, table, chair, kitchen, refrigerator and a bathroom all fit inside like puzzle pieces. there was even wood to build your own fire.
the best part: THE BED.
with the rain softly beating on the window, we slept like babies. there’s something peaceful about seclusion.

Things to Do
shenandoah valley is home to great wine. we visited prince michel winery, a woman-owned winery founded in 1982. i enjoyed a bomb tasting (yaaaasss dry rosé), and our visit included a special tour with the owner. i still can’t believe i had a chance to see how wine is made from harvest to bottling.
i highly recommend visiting prince michel’s when you’re in the area. my tasting was so good until i joined the quarterly wine club.
a short distance away from the winery is a cute amish market. you can stack up on provisions like deli sandwiches, snacks and drinks before heading to your cabin.
Join Crush Friday
last year, americans left thousands of vacation hours unused. taking time away not only allows us much needed rest, but also increases productivity when we return to work. do yourself a favor and take friday off to visit virginia.
