a group of women calling themselves mipsterz (muslim hipsters) are taking the internet by storm. according to their facebook page, a mipster is “someone who seeks inspiration from the islamic tradition of divine scriptures, volumes of knowledge, mystical poets, bold prophets, inspirational politicians, esoteric imams, and our fellow human beings searching for transcendental states of consciousness. a mipster is an ironic identity, one that serves more as a perpetual critique of oneself and of society.”
from impeccable style to skateboarding, i love how the video breaks so many myths about islam and women. yet another example of women’s beauty that doesn’t require bare bodies and sexualized imagery. for those of you who thought hijab can’t be fly, think again. while islam is traditionally synonymous with modesty, many have a problem with the idea of the “islamofashionista,” check out some of the criticism, including thoughts on using an unedited jay-z song, at huffington post.
