after spending my day off watching the first season of the misadventures of awkward black girl, i was encouraged to embrace my inner awkwardness to the fullest extent. bright red, a bare midriff, pattern mixing, and thrift store goodies comprise an awkward girl’s uniform and a simultaneous ode to my idol, punky brewster. as a little girl in a small town, i knew i was different, but couldn’t have imagined that issa rae would create a web series that speaks to my entire awkward self. fellow awkward black girls unite! awkward is the new sexy.
