“environmental racism has long been rampant with industrial pollution being dispproportionately located in black communities.”
yesterday i spoke about food deserts during the food justice panel at powershift 2011. it was a good experience; however, i must admit i’m quite skeptical of the green movement. i find that people of color’s voices are often marginalized and any comprehensive analysis around protecting the environment must also include the current economic system’s role in pollution, reliance on fossil fuels a.k.a. dirty energy, and a lack of access to healthy food.
while reflecting on my experience yesterday, i came across margaret kimberley’s article for black agenda report where she discusses environmental racism and human survival in the face of our environment’s destruction. right on time.
