i have a confession. many of the pieces that i purchased last spring and summer hung in my closet barely touched. between the pandemic and wearing a uniform at my previous job, there just wasn’t a need to interchange my wardrobe.
this taught me why a low-buy season can be super important when curating our personal styles. consuming less and with intention helps to create a wardrobe that truly reflects you personal style. in fact, i cover this idea in depth in my newest e-book, how to declutter your wardrobe and curate a style you love.
as black friday approaches, i wanted to share my five tips for a low buy season. going low buy can help you build a more sustainable cool/cold weather wardrobe that’s stylish and includes quality fabrics like wool and cashmere.
Five Tips for a Low Buy Season
audit your closet
having a low buy season starts with knowing what you have and being focused on plugging the holes. start with auditing your closet to determine what categories you feel like your missing. for example, you might be missing key basics like turtlenecks or good-fitting denim. these pieces should rise to the top of your priorities during a low buy season.
make a plan
unplanned purchases can get us into trouble. in the past, i’ve seen shopping as a hobby and believed having more things would instantly make me more stylish. not quite. today, i make an old-fashioned list at the start of each season and can be pretty meticulous about checking off pieces before getting distracted by new ones. for black friday, i’m actually using the karma app to send an alert when the items that i’m tracking go on sale.
quality over quantity
i’d rather have three high-quality pieces than ten low-quality ones. investing in natural fibers like cotton, silk, cashmere and wool are important investments for a timeless wardrobe. yes, they may be more expensive initially, but you’ll save coins in the long run given the longevity that they provide.
thrift stores and resale sites are clutch
don’t fall for the hype. everything we purchase doesn’t have to be brand new and some of those high-quality fabrics are gonna be a fraction of the price at our local thrift store or consignment shops. if you’re looking for luxury pieces, then try resale websites like the real real, fashionphile or vestiaire collective.
keep it basic
if you’re looking to create a timeless wardrobe while embracing a low buy mindset, then i suggest keeping trends to a minimum. i would use this time to amplify your basics and pull out your personality with bomb accessories like hats, belts and jewelry.
there’s so much pressure this time of year to consume frivolously, and i hope this post helps you to embrace the beauty of having less to be even more stylish. check out this youtube video for more on my philosophy of shopping with intention and luxury minimalism.
