Starting a 21 Day Happiness Project

starting a 21 day happiness project

the most difficult part of healing from surgery is slowing down. before surgery, i was buzzing around town, being cute and enjoying everything the dc metro area has to offer during spring and summer.  in a complete 180, most of my days over the past two weeks have been filled with bedrest, junk tv, cheetos and lots of social media consumption. i’m over it and starting a 21 day happiness project to shift gears on my journey.

after waking up yesterday morning dreading another uninspired day, i decided to do something about it. yeah, sickness and surgery suck, but those things don’t define me. i’m the architect of my journey and the master of my narrative. praises for this awareness (motivated by a marathon of super soul sunday) because it allowed me to welcome the emotional and spiritual renewal that can accompany physical healing. starting a 21 day happiness project

in short, i’m starting a 21 day happiness project to explore what brings me joy and pave the way for rejuvenation.

gretchen rubin’s best-selling book, the happiness project, served as an inspiration for my journey to achieve greater happiness. she has lots of great tools on her website, including a monthly newsletter and podcasts that may be helpful for folks on a similar journey. however, i’m not tied to a particular model to start my project. my first step was simply brainstorming all the things that make me happy.

the big categories are:

  • writing
  • relationships
  • spirituality
  • travel
  • black girl/womanhood
  • nature
  • creating pretty things: digital content, home interior, beauty
  • fashion
  • nature

today i’m creating a list of action items that fall under the above categories. for example, under spirituality, i’m making time to consistently pray in the morning and meditate in the evenings and under nature, i’d like to transform my back patio into a more welcoming space. i have so many ideas that i’m excited to share in hopes that they’ll motivate you all to create your own happiness projects.

i’ll share daily updates about my journey on instagram and snapchat — follow @politicsandfshn for the tea! i’ll also give a weekly recap on the blog.

Hey I might need to do this too! Around this time I get sad because Kevin leaves to go to the west coast for 4-5 months. This would be a perfect project to manage my emotions as time passes.

Yes! I agree, it’s the perfect way to center the small things that bring you joy.
