politics fashion & islamophobia

last year french lawmakers passed legislation banning “face veils,” religious garb such as nijab and burqua, worn by muslim women. the law went into effect yesterday. while islam is the second most prevalent religion in france, behind christianity, president nicolas sarkozy said the veils “imprison women” and fail to “uphold french values of equality and secularism.” that statement is so blatantly hypocritical that a rebuttal is unnecessary.

i take issue with major religions and the subordinate role their strictest adherents often delegate to women; however, facial coverings do not oppress muslim women. people do. the french law banning face veils exemplifies this concept.
